We are excited to announce that the Columbia Postdoctoral Workers–UAW Local 4100, the Student Workers of Columbia–UAW Local 2710, and the Columbia Support Staff–UAW Local 2110 will be conducting a Candidates forum with the nominated Candidates for the position of UAW Region 9A Director, Beverley Brakeman and Brandon Mancilla. The forum will be conducted to promote the fair, honest, open, and informed participation of the Union membership in the election of the UAW Region 9A Director. It will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM EDT over Zoom, and it will be recorded. Over the next two weeks, we will collectively determine the format and logistics of the forum, so please keep an eye out for updates! Most importantly, the questions that are asked at the forum will come from the membership, so please use this form to submit questions by Monday, October 3, 2022. We look forward to this opportunity for the Candidates to share the visions they have for us to continue to advance our collective struggles both in UAW Region 9A and in solidarity with other Regions of our International Union.

International Officers

The court-appointed, independent Monitor of the UAW International Union, Neil M. Barofsky of Jenner & Block LLP, is conducting Candidate forums for three offices over the next seven days. The forums are being conducted to promote the fair, honest, open, and informed participation of the Union membership in this first-ever direct election of UAW International Union Officers from October 17, 2022 through November 28, 2022. The first Candidates forum will be held in twenty minutes. Details for all three:

These Candidate forums will be livestreamed and recorded, so that all UAW members are able to view them at their convenience. The international forums will be moderated by Steven Greenhouse, former New York Times labor reporter. All UAW members are able to submit questions for the Moderator to consider asking at these forums by emailing the Monitor at UAWMonitor-Election@jenner.com with the subject line “Candidate Forum Question.” The email should specify:

  1. Whether the question relates to a specific Candidate or Candidate Forum and, if so, which one.
  2. Whether the individual submitting the question wishes to be identified with the question or remain anonymous.
  3. Whether the individual submitting the question is a member in good standing of the UAW and, if so, their Local Union number. This information will be kept confidential by the Monitor team unless the individual indicates, per the above, that they wish to be identified in connection with their question.

Questions for the International Vice President Candidates Forum and for the International Presidents Candidate Forum should be submitted no later than Sunday, September 18, 2022, at 5pm EDT and Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at 6pm EDT, respectively (i.e., no later than 24 hours before the relevant Candidate Forum). Ultimately, the Moderator retains discretion over what is asked at these forums, but member-submitted questions may certainly influence what is posed to the Candidates.
Lastly, information on how UAW members can contact the Monitor is detailed here. You can read the Monitor’s status reports here; the latest status report was filed on July 19, 2022 and can be found here. It discusses the Monitor’s ongoing investigations into the UAW, disciplinary charges that have been brought and settled by the Monitor, highlights progress in implementing the Monitor’s recommendations, and notes areas where the UAW’s compliance culture needs to be improved (i.e., UAW’s level of cooperation with the Monitor).

The impact of the One Member, One Vote direct election system referendum on the UAW is underway.
