What happens now? In this email we will overview what is happening, what happens next, contract implementation, campaigning for ongoing topics, and our current membership drive!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\uddd3\ufe0f\ud83d\udcabFirst, a quick update on things happening this month:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Our <strong>December membership meeting<\/strong> will be Dec 14th @ 6:30 pm! A key agenda item will be discussing the potential amalgamation with the Mt. Sinai postdocs!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the date for our <strong>winter socials<\/strong> &#8211; December 12th on Morningside campus &amp; December 18th at CUIMC!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Union local elections<\/strong> ongoing! <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/notice-of-nomination-and-election-of-union-stewards-17-total-and-eboard-7-total\/\">Check here for more details<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udfc6<\/strong>\ud83c\udf89<strong>Key Victories Of Our Union Contract<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are numerous victories in our <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Postdoctoral-Workers-CBA-UAW-Local-4100-2023-2026-BOOKMARKS.pdf\">contract<\/a>, please read through to make sure you have access to all the benefits. If you are missing this payment write to <a href=\"mailto:postdocunion@uaw4100.org\">postdocunion@uaw4100.org<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Salary raises: <\/strong>effective as of November 1st &#8211; but have not yet been processed by HR. You should see these updated in your paychecks of December 15 or December31\/January 1, with backpay to Nov 1st.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improved rights for fellows:<\/strong> If you are interested in this topic <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/get-involved-form\/working-groups\/\">sign up to the Fellows working group<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>International employees: <\/strong>this benefit is in effect! If you are traveling for visa reasons, reach your department HR and email us at <a href=\"mailto:postdocunion@uaw4100.org\">postdocunion@uaw4100.org<\/a> if you want some help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hardship fund: <\/strong>will be available as of January 1st, 2024. Some members interested in discussing which regulations we want in place will meet on Monday at noon <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/ZbKhPSkpmkHd7g9A8\">RSVP or send us feedback here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u270aThe Fight Continues For Future Improvements <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our union, as all unions, is an organization focused on ongoing support and campaigns to further rights, at the bargaining table and as well as outside it. The fight for better working conditions continues through assertive contract enforcement and continued organizing on topics, like <strong>childcare, back payments or the housing stipend.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/get-involved-form\/working-groups\/\">Sign up in our working groups<\/a> if you are interested in organizing around these topics (or propose any other).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Columbia did not want to commit central money<\/strong> for our contract implementation, but the<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSe7z29C3p_VmK8nV5BJLadx-b5IRppX7bKYoQsGBNR-DSINyg\/viewform\"><strong>faculty at Columbia is circulating this letter<\/strong><\/a> requesting them to do so. We want to continue supporting this fight for more institutional support from Columbia to its core missions! Our collective power demonstrated that when we advocate for our rights, we have the ability to protect ourselves and enforce our values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udea72.- makes our Union <strong>more democratic and inclusive<\/strong>, since membership gives you the <strong>right to take part in the Union\u2019s governance<\/strong> through elections, working groups, committees and other processes, including and how to spend our financial resources. For your voice to be heard, it is in your best interest that you become a Union member.&nbsp;<br>\ud83c\udf0d3.- you will be joining a <strong>broader movement of postdocs and academic researchers<\/strong> who are unionizing <strong>across NYC and the country<\/strong> to improve conditions of researchers in academia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Lasty, again <strong>these achievements reflect that when we work together to defend our rights, we win<\/strong>. We thank each and every one of you who talked to co-workers, attended rallies, pickets, bargaining sessions and overall for the strong solidarity across disciplines, departments, campuses\u2026 Together, we have achieved significant improvements not only for us at Columbia but also set the bar for other postdocs in the city on the path of unionization (like Cornell, Mt. Sinai, Princeton, NYU).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As aforementioned, <strong>the fight goes on<\/strong>.
