{"id":6969,"date":"2023-08-03T20:38:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T00:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/?p=6969"},"modified":"2023-08-06T20:41:32","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T00:41:32","slug":"strike-authorization-vote-begins-on-monday-bargaining-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/strike-authorization-vote-begins-on-monday-bargaining-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"Strike Authorization Vote begins on Monday \u2013 Bargaining Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Banner-quote-Longer-1024x198.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Banner-quote-Longer-1024x198.png 1024w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Banner-quote-Longer-300x58.png 300w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Banner-quote-Longer-768x148.png 768w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Banner-quote-Longer-1536x297.png 1536w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Banner-quote-Longer-2048x396.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Columbia Admin\u2019s is preventing progress on core bargaining issues<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, August 7th, we will begin voting to authorize a strike in response to the Administration\u2019s inadequate offers for a second contract and their unwillingness to bargain in good faith, including unlawful behavior such as blocking salary raises agreed out of our contract until a new contract is ratified.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A<em> strike authorization vote is a signal to Columbia that we are united and committed to taking whatever collective action is necessary to win a fair contract!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>We have <strong>won victories<\/strong> in a number of issues:&nbsp;<ul><li>real recourse from bullying once the new policy is in place;&nbsp;<\/li><li>healthcare emergency fund: central money committed to postdocs\/ARSs to help cover unexpected medical expenses;&nbsp;<\/li><li>$1,500 in relocation costs for new postdocs\/ARSs;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Fellows are offered $3,000\/year to compensate for the lost benefits due to their independent contractor status<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>But the<strong> Administration\u2019s behavior is obstructing progress<\/strong> on key issues including:&nbsp;<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ENpxmKvtUYbl5BOBFOas1NXvNJqDQYFQHC0rSOAgg7M\/edit?usp=sharing\">fair compensation<\/a> &#8211; including minum salaries that compensate for the high inflation of the last years&nbsp; [ART 5],&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ENpxmKvtUYbl5BOBFOas1NXvNJqDQYFQHC0rSOAgg7M\/edit?usp=sharing\">institutional support for housing &amp; childcare and automatic lump sum payment to compensate for high inflation<\/a> [ART 3, 4 and 5]&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1bmaE1tUMxHmRJMx1fOQfR4NxCi31dSKTn9M00lJ9hBE\/edit?usp=drive_link\">international workers<\/a> &#8211; reimbursement of costs incurred to maintain Visa status regardless of the PI research grants [ART 12]<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ENpxmKvtUYbl5BOBFOas1NXvNJqDQYFQHC0rSOAgg7M\/edit?usp=sharing\">and equal treatment of fellows<\/a> [ART2].&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\uddf3\ufe0f Mark your Calendar! It would make any moves on our proposal for compensation contingent on CU Admin offering institutional support to postdocs\/ARSs in the form of a Housing Stipend and enhanced childcare support. The administration did not respond.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>On Tuesday we discussed and reached agreements on protections for <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Sz3VNI2rrj9JeF_h3foOMgicLmKcJfG4\/view?usp=sharing\">Intellectual Property, Authorship and Professional development<\/a>:<ul><li>We won the ability of the union to defend postdocs\/ARSs and, hopefully, resolve issues of Intellectual Property &amp; Authorship when they arise. When a worker has a problem related to IP or authorship we will be able to convene a meeting that can become a tool for the union and its members to raise and resolve the issues. The University and any PIs involved in IP\/authorship disputes will have to explain their choices, with us as a union on the other side to defend the interests of our workers.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>CU Admin is pressuring us to accept a mediator that will run negotiations. This is a power move trying to get us to concede without making any realistic offer.
