We will discuss both the 3rd (May 9th) and the 4th (May 11th) negotiation sessions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/j\/83571003277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>RSVP for the debrief discussion<\/strong> <strong>Friday at 12:30pm<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>But OMG &#8211; so many things happened today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With today\u2019s session, we discussed the remaining non economic articles. CU Admin has been reluctant to discuss compensation. Now they have to engage with our economic demands!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While bargaining was happening, union members had the chance to present their amazing scientific work at the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.columbia.edu\/events\/2023-columbia-university-postdoctoral-research-symposium\">postdoctoral research symposium<\/a> &#8211; and showed their support for the ongoing bargaining!<strong> <\/strong>The symposium was a chance to catch up on the latest research news and simultaneously, exchange ideas on bargaining. <em>40 out of 57 posters displaying flyers in support of our Union.<\/em> THANK YOU to everyone who is showing us their solidarity, appreciation, and gratitude to what the CPW is doing. It&#8217;s been very fulfilling. We couldn&#8217;t make it without your support.<strong> \ud83e\udd13\u270a<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/PostdocSymp-2023.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6815\" width=\"532\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/PostdocSymp-2023.png 709w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/PostdocSymp-2023-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Also, at 10 am we and the American Association of University Professors delivered a <a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/petitions\/refund-of-lost-retirement-contributions?clear_id=true&amp;source=direct_link&amp;link_id=0&amp;can_id=4b22c2e500bc150b72545318695b6e60&amp;email_referrer=email_1537743&amp;email_subject=sign-and-share-our-petition-requesting-columbia-to-refund-our-retirement-contributions\">petition to reimburse the retirement contributions<\/a> that were frozen in 2021 due to pandemic-related financial decisions. <em>800+ signatures were delivered to the Provost\u2019s office!<\/em>&nbsp; There was no financial hardship for CU Admin during the pandemic &gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/contract-campaing\/the-financial-condition-cu\/\">see the financial report for Columbia University<\/a>! <strong>\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/RetirementPetition.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6811\" width=\"443\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/RetirementPetition.jpg 591w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/RetirementPetition-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/RetirementPetition-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a brief recap of the May 11th bargaining session. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tZMkde2spzkvHNxmazZoJ8kPgUX_EiOxzUDr\"><strong>Come to the debrief tomorrow to hear more<\/strong><\/a><strong>!!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>9:30 am, Gathering! <\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>We met in front of Hammer, CPW set up tables and Postdocs\/ARSs came to socialize, and get t-shirts, pins and flyers (as always!! This has been fun, come and check it out!).<\/li><li><strong>10 am, Start of bargaining!&nbsp; <\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>As usual the<strong> <\/strong>CU administration team joined&nbsp; late (25 min this time).<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-17-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6809\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-17-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-17-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-17-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-17-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-17.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>During this session, <strong>the following articles were discussed<\/strong>:<br><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1KuN3PJHDR7jKXbspoUO36aut-uJAPiFdByabYTRTJGE\/edit?usp=share_link\"><strong>Duration of our contract<\/strong><\/a>:<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>CU admin wants it to last 3-5 years. We want a shorter contract (2 years) to ensure that new Postdocs\/ARSs that join CU can negotiate terms more frequently, so that they can fight for their rights during volatile economic times with unforgiving inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Art9-GrievArbitrat.pdf\"><strong>List of arbitrators<\/strong><\/a>:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In case that a grievance does not get resolved between a worker and the University, an outside Arbitrator needs to be involved. CU Admin suggested names for 3 Arbitrators of their liking. We are skeptical of accepting all of them all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1OVzpu39xZTbw8OUQ5j08IhoE-kqeDceTcTearOu-i3o\/edit#heading=h.hd4l85yhmarj\"><strong>Union Access and Rights<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Union\u2019s Staff Organizers must have access to CU buildings so that they can communicate to members. CU Admin strongly opposes this, citing security issues (excuses? Editor\u2019s note). We would abide by their safety protocols and have staff organizers ID\u2019s screened and pre-approved\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1dapKUuRGzdh9dHk-OBsCRQwk5R-FLKgFB0ZIY7sK2Rc\/edit#\"><strong>Recognition<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that Postdocs that are paid directly from a granting agency (as opposed to Columbia\u2019s payroll) deserve the same protections as all of us. They should be able to afford to live and do research in NYC. Instead, CU Admin claims that they are not employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1E0J4O60pq6rYLRwrNPoU5u6yrJ4BewCfIG1GsccPVZk\/edit\"><strong>Job Postings<\/strong><\/a><strong> (this article is about Diversity and Inclusion):&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to promote diversity in our unit and in CU as much as possible. The University should track applications (they do it already with ARSs), so that we can monitor bottlenecks in diversity and inclusion. CU Admin says that it&#8217;s an impossible burden on their bureaucracy, but &#8220;We are a hugely progressive organization&#8221; &#8211; in words only (Editor\u2019s note #2)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1CIyOMfD_rXeLYg8uRDhtwXSw8f6m1zp6zUeNJkQY-ug\/edit\"><strong>Workspace and Materials<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We demand accessible workplaces: ramps, elevators,at least one automatic door per building, and adjustable desks. They replied that they are working on it\u2026 for decades now (Editor\u2019s note #3). We also asked for gender neutral bathrooms &#8211; same answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1DmSjoTTBFn3T-Is8dIDzc40db8_8c_MV4QlwJw1801Q\/edit\"><strong>Union Dues<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We want and deserve a robust union. To maintain that, union dues need to be properly deducted in a timely manner. CU admin&nbsp; has not been consistent and owes the union several thousands from mistakes they have made, and they want to remove in the contract a pivotal part regarding the dues.! This is a complex issue that we need to address asap!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Caucusing: <\/strong>&nbsp;<br>During the session, we took breaks to discuss our strategy.<ul><li>The importance of non verbal communication on the bargaining table. CU admin are coming in late, talking in circles, leaving cell phones on, etc. That is not a professional nor respectful way to present as a team.<\/li><li>Next strategy: we need to counter their stalling strategy.&nbsp; Let\u2019s get as much visibility as possible and show them how much we care about moving forward with negotiation for a better contract!<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tZMkde2spzkvHNxmazZoJ8kPgUX_EiOxzUDr\">COME TO THE DEBRIEF SESSION<\/a> and tell us what you think! Any suggestion, impression, or help is very much appreciated.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>What\u2019s next?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Bargaining committee have presented all our non-economic proposals and now it is in the Administration&#8217;s court to respond how much are they willing to spend on supporting postdocs\/ARSs. Despite us repeatedly saying that we want a compensation proposal for the next session they just replied with vagueness that we may get one on May 23rd. We may need to increase the pressure!
