Check out a side-by-side comparison of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CPW_Contract-Flyer_4.19.21.pdf\"><b>rights we won<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in our contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a reminder our July membership meeting is tonight at 8:30pm. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/events\/membership-meeting-10\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here for more information and to RSVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To celebrate our anniversary we will be tabling with food and coffee on campus this week &#8211; come and talk with your union colleagues, get questions answered, offer feedback, and pick up a Union T-Shirt!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morningside Campus &#8211; Wednesday, July 21 from 4:30-6pm in front of Low Library<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical Campus &#8211; Friday, July 23 from 12pm-1:30pm at Haven Plaza<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successfully Enforcing Our Rights<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through our union we have assisted over 100 researchers with workplace issues and grievances, both covered by our contract and not. If you ever have a question or concern at work, get in touch with your Union Steward, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/contact-us\/cpw-uaw-workplace-issue-form\/\"><b>or fill out a workplace issue form<\/b><\/a><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay Raises<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our contract increased minimum salaries for postdocs to the highest in New York City and guaranteed that everyone gets at least a 2.5% raise every fiscal year starting this July. Throughout the year we have been working with Postdocs\/ARS and the administration to ensure that our new salaries are correctly implemented. We will continue to work to make sure everyone receives the raises guaranteed in our contract.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid Time Off<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our contract codified 23 paid vacation days per fiscal year, with back pay for days not used at the end of an appointment. We have been working with unit members to ensure that these rights are enforced. A member shares how the new policy affected him over the past year:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5400 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Victor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1116\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Victor.png 1116w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Victor-300x93.png 300w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Victor-1024x317.png 1024w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Victor-768x238.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1116px) 100vw, 1116px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winning New Rights<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University-wide protections against power-based harassment or bullying<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to our campaign for a fair contract, the university recognized &#8211; for the first time &#8211; that bullying and power-based harassment is a big problem in academia. Columbia agreed to establish a university-wide working group with our union to recommend a\u00a0 new policy for these cases. We expect these discussions to start within the month! Our anti-bullying working group has developed a survey to gather data about types of bullying behaviors at Columbia. Check your inbox for a personalized link, with the subject \u201c<\/span><b>Survey on Power-Based Harassment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making Columbia a More Family Friendly Place for Research<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our contract established guaranteed parental leave for any new parent (in addition to the medical leave of the birth mother) including for Postdoctoral Research Fellows &#8211; here\u2019s how one member described utilizing this new right:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5401 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Liz.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1115\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Liz.png 1115w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Liz-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Liz-1024x352.png 1024w, https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Liz-768x264.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1115px) 100vw, 1115px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents Working Group and Emergency Childcare<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During COVID-19 however, parents faced new challenges as schools closed. Researchers advocated relentlessly for increased childcare benefits, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1322263063396077573?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circulating a petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1360370652428066818?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phone calls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Provost, publishing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/opinion\/2020\/12\/09\/childcare-is-a-necessity-columbia-isnt-treating-it-as-one\/?fbclid=IwAR1OoS0V6joVRqQjfIo9zxF9-yoDe7oPylp4QVG4hLEBr81lChX5lUpfALc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an op-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and organizing delegations to university decision-makers. We won an additional crisis care benefit of $1,000 that\u00a0 parents could use for out-of-pocket child care costs during the pandemic, but much more is needed. As we begin our second year, our Parents Working Group wants to start making links to other researchers in New York so we can advocate for better childcare for working parents across the city.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusion, Equity and Affirmation of all Genders<\/span><b><br \/><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We continue to seek ways to join the fight for greater diversity, equity, inclusion and visibility at Columbia. Certain gender-affirming surgeries that are crucial for transgender workers will not be covered under Columbia\u2019s health care plans until January 2022. Delaying these kinds of surgeries has been shown to have a negative effect on mental health and it is important that workers can access this treatment as soon as possible. It is important that we make sure Columbia follows through on implementing these crucial changes to make the university more inclusive, and help any worker that wants assistance before January. There are more than 100,000 academic workers across the country who are represented by UAW, and in the past year we raised our collective voice to:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fight back against Trump-era xenophobia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/sign-the-petition-oppose-unfair-visa-revocations-for-scholars-%e8%af%b7%e5%a4%a7%e5%ae%b6%e7%ad%be%e5%90%8d%e8%af%b7%e6%84%bf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposing visa revocations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Chinese scholars, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/fight-trumps-visa-rule-changes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitting comments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on visa rule changes, to co-hosting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ColumbiaPostdocUnion\/posts\/676663302952587\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">info sessions with an immigration lawyer<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Protect STEM funding during COVID-19, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1255198841479090176?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">political action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with other UAW locals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Call on elected leaders and President Biden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ColumbiaPostdocUnion\/posts\/806507049968211\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-worker and pro-education policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1386662604094025735?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TRIPS<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Support-WTO-TRIPS-statement-.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waiver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the COVID-19 vaccine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Spoke out against anti-Asian racism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and participated in educational forums and discussions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make our Union Even Stronger!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to help improve the Postdoc\/ARS experience at Columbia?
