{"id":3595,"date":"2020-06-09T17:48:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T21:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/?page_id=3595"},"modified":"2020-10-01T12:31:10","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T16:31:10","slug":"now-is-the-time-for-a-fair-agreement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/home-2\/now-is-the-time-for-a-fair-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Tell Columbia that now is the time for a fair agreement."},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear President Lee Bollinger and the Trustees of Columbia University,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As our CPW-UAW Bargaining Committee and the University team endeavor to finish negotiations by the end of June, we urge your administration to execute a fair agreement that reflects the value Postdoc and Associate Researchers bring to Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since voting by an overwhelming 68% to unionize in 2018, researchers across campus have taken numerous actions in support of a fair contract:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A majority of researchers signed an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/contract-negotiations\/petition-hd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open letter demanding fair recourse on discrimination and harassment&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hundreds of us signed petitions demanding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ColumbiaPostdocUnion\/photos\/a.136008533684736\/518963902055862\/?type=3&amp;theater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fair compensation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CPW-COVID-19-Petition-.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a strong contract during the pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have shared our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1176149427775557633\/photo\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1217146064685412352\/photo\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CPWUAW\/status\/1249809696942366723\/photo\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, opinion pieces on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/opinion\/2020\/02\/06\/postdocs-and-the-price-of-prestige-at-columbia-university\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fair compensation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@chloe.pasin\/a-chance-to-break-down-gender-barriers-at-columbia-6c3af64707fb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender equity in academia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many testimonials in bargaining.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have met with university leadership across Columbia to discuss our priorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have gained the support of our Congressional representatives after hundreds of us <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiapostdocunion.org\/contract-negotiations\/elected-representatives-outreach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sent letters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ColumbiaPostdocUnion\/photos\/a.136008533684736\/522285408390378\/?type=3&amp;theater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organized delegations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to meet with them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spite of these and further actions, and almost 50 bargaining sessions, your administration has remained rigid on topics of the highest importance to researchers. This has persisted even as the COVID-19 crisis has emphasized how critical we are to Columbia\u2019s mission and ability to restart the research program. Many of us are researching COVID-19, working as essential employees, and hundreds more of us have volunteered our research abilities to support the broader community. Our work provides one of the university\u2019s most stable and predictable funding sources during this crisis with almost a billion dollars of grant revenue annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the time for silence. Current circumstances threaten our ability to attract and retain a diverse community, the freedom of research, and the value of human dignity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Columbia has the opportunity to help lead the change that all of us would like to see in New York City and world-wide.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We need a fair contract that makes Columbia more equitable, inclusive, and competitive so we can participate in the ramp up and continue our research.
